LAN connection to other computers lost when router looses connection. – Networking – BleepingComputer

Setup:

Netgear modem > Netgear router > Trendnet and Netgear Switch > Network computers.

The router is set as the DHCP server.

Modem = Netgear CM1150V

Router = Netgear Nighthawk RAX50

Switch = Trendnet TEG-S24D

Switch = Netgear GS110EMX (10 Gb)

On several occasions my router seems to have hiccup and loses internet connection. Whenever this has occurred, I am also unable to access other computers or my either of my NAS on the network, despite the fact that they are all connected to a switch and should be accessible regardless of the status of the router or modem. The moment I disconnect the cables between the router and switches, my LAN connection to the other computers is restored. This would indicate that for some reason, when the router is connected to the switches, the switches are sending all data between the computers through the router, and when it has the occasional hiccup, the traffic is unable to be routed. However, once I pull the cables between the router and switch, the switch seems to route traffic directly between the computers (or to the other switch).

My questions are:

Is my assessment correct?

Is it normal for the switch route local traffic through the router rather than directly between computers? If so, is there a way to configure my network in such a way that the router cannot create issues with the local traffic?
